KOLKATA: On 30th May, The Calcutta High Court has granted conditional bail to five associates of Basirhat BJP candidate Rekha Patra. The court’s decision, handed down by the division bench comprising Justice Tirthankar Ghosh and Justice Biswarup Chowdhury, marks a crucial turn in the ongoing legal proceedings involving the BJP workers.

The five BJP workers—Geeta Bara, Ajit Sardar, Sudev Dey, Sukhprakash Mondal, and Uppal Maiti—were granted bail with specific conditions.

“The High Court granted the bail pleas of BJP workers Geeta Bara, Ajit Sardar, Sudev Dey, Sukhprakash Mondal, and Uppal Maiti,”

-confirmed the official statement.

As per the court’s directive, these individuals are prohibited from entering the Sandeshkhali area except on the day of polling. This condition aims to prevent any potential disturbances or influence in the region, which has been a hotspot of political tension.

The judges explicitly stated-

“These five litigants cannot enter the Sandeshkhali area. But they can go there on polling day.”

The decision to restrict their movement in Sandeshkhali is seen as a precautionary measure to ensure a peaceful electoral process. The case, which has garnered considerable attention, is set for its next hearing on June 12, as the judiciary continues to oversee the matter closely.

This matter follows a series of legal battles and political confrontations in the region. The High Court’s decision underscores the judiciary’s role in balancing law and order while respecting the rights of individuals involved in political activities.

Observers and political analysts are closely monitoring the implications of this ruling. The conditional bail granted to these BJP workers could influence the political landscape in the Sandeshkhali area, particularly in the context of upcoming elections.

Sandeshkhali, amidst the heightened anticipation of the final round of voting in the West Bengal Assembly elections on June 1st, has become a focal point of political dispute. Recent days have witnessed a surge of allegations and counter-allegations between rival political factions. Both the BJP and Trinamool Congress have traded accusations of assault and violence against their respective party workers, exacerbating tensions in the region.

The incident in question took place on May 6th, when the BJP alleged that its workers were the victims of an assault.

“No one has been arrested in this incident,”

-lamented a BJP spokesperson, as the party’s supporters protested in front of the local police station, demanding speedy action.

In a retaliatory move, a Trinamool Congress leader was subsequently accused of beating up a BJP worker at his residence.

“A case was filed against Basirhat BJP candidate Rekha and her companions in that incident,”

-revealed a local source, leading to the arrest of the individuals involved.

However, the legal tussle did not end there.

“Rekha’s five companions got relief in that case,” as the court ordered that they be allowed to participate in the final phase of the elections on June 1st, underscoring the high-stakes nature of the political battle unfolding in Sandeshkhali.

The region has long been a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress, but the BJP has been making concerted efforts to wrest control in this election. This points to the underlying issues, said a political analyst, alluding to the deep-rooted political rivalries that have come to the fore in the run-up to the final phase of voting.
