KOLKATA: On 26th February, In Sandeshkhali, a virtual ‘mass coup’ unfolded against the ruling party, as the common people expressed their discontent with Sheng Shah Jahan’s party switch. The political upheaval in Sandeshkhali has transcended state boundaries, becoming a focal point in national politics. The Bengal BJP’s response was to plan a protest at the base of the Gandhi statue in Kolkata alongside Sandeshkhali, a move met with resistance from the Kolkata Police.
BJP state president Sukant Majumder, undeterred, sought legal recourse by approaching the Calcutta High Court to secure permission for the planned protest. Justice Kaushik Chand, after reviewing BJP MP’s case, granted permission, and the case is slated for a hearing on Tuesday.
Originally scheduled for three days from February 27 to 29, the protest in Kolkata aimed to be led by BJP state president Sukant Majumder and opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari. However, the Kolkata Police denied permission when requested, citing the need for clearance to use the Maidan area, which is under army jurisdiction.
The BJP contended that despite securing army permission, the police clearance remained elusive. The police further stated restrictions on the use of loudspeakers in the area, justifying their denial of permission. In a counterargument, the BJP highlighted a recent protest led by Mamata Banerjee in the same location, questioning the apparent inconsistency.
