Today, On 24th July, In the defamation case filed by ex-UN diplomat Lakshmi Murdeshwar Puri against TMC MP Saket Gokhale, the Delhi High Court urged both sides to resolve the matter, saying, “Please take into consideration courts are already overflooded.”

New Delhi: In the defamation case brought by former diplomat Lakshmi Murdeshwar Puri against TMC MP Saket Gokhale, the Delhi High Court on Thursday encouraged both parties to reach a settlement, stating, “courts are overflooded.”
A bench comprising Justices Anil Kshetarpal and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar suggested a meeting to resolve the issue after noting that Gokhale had issued an apology, which Puri accepted.

The bench remarked,
“You’re in public life, respected public figures. If both parties can sit together and try to resolve the dispute. Please take into consideration courts are already overflooded,”
The court was reviewing Gokhale’s appeal against a single judge’s decision from July 1, 2024, which prohibited him from making further posts about Puri on social media or any online platform. The single judge had also ordered him to apologize to Puri and pay Rs 50 lakh in damages.
The bench, On Thursday, noted that, in addition to the apology, property had been attached concerning the payment.
The bench stated,
“Attachment to continue,”
Both senior advocate Maninder Singh, representing Puri, and senior advocate Amit Sibal, representing Gokhale, informed the bench that they would discuss the settlement proposal with their clients.
Earlier, on July 8, the Delhi High Court raised objections to an affidavit submitted by Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale in his appeal against a previous order that directed him to pay Rs 50 lakh as compensation to former diplomat Lakshmi Puri.
The Delhi High Court, in a detailed judgment dated July 1, 2024, by Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani, firmly rejected Gokhale’s allegations.
