KOLKATA: Today(on 23rd August), The Calcutta High Court issued a significant directive, ordering the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to transfer all case-related materials, including the case diary, CCTV footage, and other pertinent details concerning the financial irregularities case against Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The CBI is expected to officially take charge of the case by 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Justice Rajarshi Bhardwaj, presiding over a single-judge bench, was hearing the petition that highlighted “serious financial illegalities” allegedly committed by Dr. Sandeep Ghosh during his tenure as the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for September 7.
The Kolkata Police initiated an investigation into Dr. Ghosh’s activities on August 20, following allegations of “financial irregularities” at the renowned state-run health facility.
A senior officer disclosed-
“On August 20, the Kolkata Police launched an investigation into Dr. Ghosh for his alleged involvement in ‘financial irregularities’ at RG Kar Hospital and Medical College.”
The investigation into these allegations intensified after a four-member SIT was formed to delve deeper into the alleged financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College. This investigation coincided with the discovery of a postgraduate trainee doctor’s body at the hospital earlier this month, further complicating the case.
Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, who was appointed as the principal of the hospital in 2021, has been under increasing scrutiny. In connection with a separate investigation, he is also expected to undergo a polygraph test on Friday. This test was sanctioned by a special court to assist the CBI in its probe into the rape-murder case involving the trainee doctor.
“The former principal was questioned by the CBI over the past eight days in connection with its investigation into the rape and murder of the doctor.”
-a source close to the investigation revealed.
This tragic incident has ignited nationwide protests, compelling the Chief Justice of India (CJI)-led Supreme Court bench to take suo motu cognizance of the matter.
This transfer of the case to the CBI is expected to bring about a more robust and transparent investigation process, ensuring that all aspects of the allegations against Dr. Ghosh are meticulously examined. As the CBI takes over, the focus will likely remain on uncovering the full extent of the alleged financial irregularities and their possible connections to other criminal activities.
