The CBI is also investigating a possible conspiracy between Mondal, Ghosh, and Roy, emphasizing an unexplained two-day delay in seizing Roy’s clothing, which could have compromised evidence. Both the High Court and Supreme Court (which took suo moto cognizance) have questioned the 14-hour delay in registering a police case after the body was discovered.

KOLKATA: Today (26th Sept): The CBI, investigating the RG Kar Hospital rape-murder case, informed a Kolkata court that “false records” related to the case were created at Tala Police Station.
Tasked by the Calcutta High Court to probe the death of a junior doctor, the agency revealed that CCTV footage from the police station has been sent to a central forensics lab for analysis. Kolkata Police has yet to comment.
This development follows the CBI’s questioning of Abhijit Mondal, the officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station during the incident, who was arrested for evidence tampering.
Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the hospital’s former chief, has also been detained over financial misconduct. Both are in CBI custody.
Additionally, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer seen on CCTV entering the room where the victim’s body was later discovered, has been arrested.
Following their court appearance, Mondal and Ghosh have been remanded to judicial custody until September 30.
The CBI suspects a “nexus” between the two, citing phone calls between them. However, Mondal’s lawyer argued that such communication was routine given the gravity of the situation. This defense was reiterated in court today, where it was noted that the CBI has yet to provide substantial evidence for its claims.
Besides seeking justice for the murder of the 31-year-old doctor, the CBI is probing alleged evidence destruction. Although Mondal is not accused of the murder or rape, the CBI believes he may have been involved in a cover-up. The state government and police are under pressure, with accusations of shielding the culprits.
Both courts also inquired why the hospital, then under Ghosh’s leadership, did not act promptly, which could have triggered timely police intervention.
Mondal was admitted to the prison hospital after reportedly tripping while being escorted from the court.
Additionally, Dr. Birupaksha Biswas, alleged to be close to Ghosh, has been questioned by the CBI. Biswas is believed to be associated with the ‘North Bengal lobby,‘ which medical students claim has previously threatened them.
Junior doctors, who have been on strike for over 40 days protesting their colleague’s death, have partially resumed emergency and essential duties. Despite their return, the doctors clarified that their protest is not over, warning that they may resume full-scale agitation if necessary. They demand justice and the removal of three officials, including the Health Secretary, whom they accuse of being involved in the case.
