Rampur Eviction Case| Allahabad High Court Grants Bail to Samajwadi Party Leader Azam Khan

UTTAR PRADESH: The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday granted bail to senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan in a case related to the alleged forceful eviction of residents from Rampur’s Dungarpur colony.

Justice Sameer Jain of the Allahabad High Court allowed the bail application filed by Khan in his appeal challenging his conviction and 10-year sentence handed down by an MP/MLA court in Rampur. The same court had also sentenced a contractor, Barkat Ali, to seven years in prison in connection with the case. Ali, too, has approached the high court seeking relief.

The order comes as a relief for Khan, who had been convicted on May 30, 2023, in the case registered at Ganj police station, Rampur.

Background of the Case

The case was lodged in August 2019, following a complaint by a local resident, Abrar, who alleged that in December 2016, Khan, along with retired circle officer Ale Hasan Khan and contractor Barkat Ali, physically assaulted him and demolished his house while issuing threats to his life.

The complaint led to multiple cases being registered against Khan and others. Residents of Dungarpur colony reportedly filed at least 12 separate cases related to forced eviction, including charges of robbery, theft, and assault.

Conviction by the MP/MLA Court

On May 30, 2023, the MP/MLA court in Rampur convicted Azam Khan and sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment, while co-accused Barkat Ali was sentenced to seven years. Following the verdict, Khan immediately challenged the ruling before the Allahabad High Court, where the appeal has been pending.
