Punjab & Haryana: A PIL petition submitted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, seeking to prohibit the hosting of cricket matches at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur.

Nikhil Thamman, a final-year law student at the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS), Panjab University, filed a plea asserting that the construction of the cricket stadium at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur lacked essential environmental clearances, violating the Environment Impact Assessment Notification of 2006.

Thamman’s plea highlights that the stadium falls within a 10-kilometer radius of a bird sanctuary in Sector-21, Chandigarh, necessitating prior environmental clearance from the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) as per a Supreme Court directive, which has not been acquired.

Moreover, Thamman argues that necessary forest and wildlife clearance from the Department of Forest and Wildlife, Chandigarh, not obtained for constructing the stadium.

Citing recent cricket events, including an Indian Premier League (IPL) match, Thamman emphasizes that upcoming IPL matches featuring the Punjab Kings XI team are scheduled at the stadium. He urges the court to intervene and halt further cricket activities at the venue, requesting directives to relevant bodies like the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) to refrain from hosting additional IPL matches at the stadium during the ongoing IPL season.

Additionally, he requested the Court to mandate appropriate legal consequences against the authorities responsible for permitting the unauthorized construction of the stadium and for allowing cricket matches to take place there. Furthermore, the petitioner asked for an injunction to stop any ongoing construction activities at the stadium.

The petition lodged by advocates Sunaina, Abhishek Khurana, and Narinder Singh.
