NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Law & Justice, Department of Justice, Government of India issued an official notification from Jaisalmer House, New Delhi.

The notification announced the appointment of two new Additional Judges to the Bombay High Court.

The appointment was done under the powers given by the Constitution of India. As per clause (1) of Article 224 of the Constitution, the President of India has appointed two individuals to serve as Additional Judges for the Bombay High Court.

These two respected individuals are:

  1. Shri Gautam Ashwin Ankhad
  2. Shri Mahendra Madhavrao Nerlikar

These appointments are made “for a period of two years, in that order of seniority, with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices.”

This move is part of the ongoing efforts by the government to strengthen the judiciary and improve the speed of justice delivery in the country. Once they take charge, both Shri Gautam Ashwin Ankhad and Shri Mahendra Madhavrao Nerlikar will serve in their respective positions for two years.

The official notification was signed by Shri Pagan Srinivasan, Joint Secretary to the Government of India. The document has also been sent to several key officials and departments to ensure smooth and formal communication, including the Registrar General of the Bombay High Court, Governors and Chief Ministers of Maharashtra and Goa, the Chief Secretary of both states, and the offices of the President and Prime Minister of India.

The notification clearly states:

“In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 224 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint S/Shri (i) Gautam Ashwin Ankhad and (ii) Mahendra Madhavrao Nerlikar, to be Additional Judges of the Bombay High Court for a period of two years, in that order of seniority, with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices.”

This means that both newly appointed judges will serve in the Bombay High Court for a term of two years, beginning from the date they officially take charge of their roles.

Earlier, the Supreme Court collegium had suggested their names for the appointment in September 2024. After reviewing their qualifications and experience, the collegium recommended their names for the post of additional judges.

As of July 1, 2025, the Bombay High Court is functioning with 64 judges, while its approved strength is 94 judges. This shows that the High Court is currently short by 30 judges, making these new appointments important to help reduce the burden and improve the efficiency of the judiciary.

These appointments are expected to strengthen the functioning of the Bombay High Court and help in handling the rising number of cases more effectively.
