The Madras High Court has allowed the Pongal release of the Tamil film “Parasakthi”, directed by Sudha Kongara and starring Sivakarthikeyan, after dismissing a legal challenge alleging plagiarism. The judgment was delivered by Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy after hearing detailed arguments from all sides involved in the dispute.

The film “Parasakthi”, which also stars Ravi Mohan, Atharvaa and Sreeleela, is scheduled to be released in theatres on January 10.

A legal issue had come up just before the release when an assistant director, KV Rajendran, filed a petition before the Chennai High Court. He alleged that the story of the film was copied from his earlier registered script titled “Chemmozhi”.

During the court proceedings, Senior Advocate PS Raman appeared on behalf of director Sudha Kongara, while Senior Advocate Aravind Pandian represented Dawn Pictures, the production house behind “Parasakthi”.

Both counsels strongly opposed the plagiarism allegations and argued that the film was an original work. After hearing their submissions, the court refused to grant any interim stay on the release of the film.

Earlier, the High Court had directed the South Indian Film Writers’ Association to examine the plagiarism complaint and submit a report by January 2. The court also instructed both the petitioner and the filmmakers to cooperate with the association and present their respective versions as part of the inquiry process.

One of the main concerns raised during the hearings was whether “Parasakthi” should be allowed to release while the dispute was still being examined. However, the High Court made it clear that there were no sufficient legal grounds to stop the release of the film.

The court noted that merely alleging similarities was not enough to impose a restraint on a movie’s theatrical release.

With this decision, the Madras High Court has now officially cleared the way for “Parasakthi” to hit theatres as planned during the Pongal festival week. The ruling has brought relief to the filmmakers, distributors and exhibitors, as the film was expected to be one of the major festival releases.

Based on the promos and posters released so far, “Parasakthi” is believed to be set against the backdrop of the anti-Hindi protests of the 1960s, a politically sensitive and historically significant period in Tamil Nadu. This theme had further added to the public interest and scrutiny surrounding the film.

The film’s release has also drawn attention because it will clash at the box office with Thalapathy Vijay’s farewell film “Jana Nayagan”, which is scheduled to release on January 9. With both films arriving during the festive season, trade analysts expect strong competition in theatres.

The High Court’s decision has now put an end to uncertainty surrounding “Parasakthi”, confirming that the movie will release on January 10 as scheduled, despite the plagiarism allegations.
