CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) lawyers wing has taken a decisive step, moving a petition as an urgent motion to the Election Commission of India (ECI). The petition seeks to direct the ECI to prevent Prime Minister Narendra Modi from potentially misusing his official position during what has been dubbed as a spiritual visit to Vivekananda Rock in Kanniyakumari.
The urgent representation, it emphasizes the concern that PM Modi’s purported meditation excursion at Vivekananda Rock, scheduled from May 30 to June 1, might not be solely spiritual in nature. Instead, it raises suspicions that the Prime Minister could be exploiting this visit as a platform to rally for his party, deliberately stoking Hindu sentiments, especially considering the proximity of the visit to the final phase of the Parliamentary elections.
According to the petition, forcing government broadcast agencies to livestream what could be construed as a political pilgrimage is not just a breach of the political code of conduct but could also constitute an election offense under the provisions of the Representation of People Act. The TNCC lawyers wing firmly believes that such actions could unfairly sway public opinion and influence the electoral process.
Commenting on the matter, a spokesperson for the TNCC lawyers wing stated-
“We express profound concern regarding the possible exploitation of official positions for political advantages, especially in delicate settings such as religious landmarks. It is crucial for the Election Commission to promptly and decisively act to maintain the credibility of the electoral system.”
The petition underscores the need for vigilance against any attempts to blur the lines between spiritual endeavors and political agendas.
“Though the right to religious practices is revered, it must not be manipulated for electoral gain.”

This move by the TNCC lawyers wing reflects broader concerns about the politicization of religious symbols and spaces, particularly in the context of election campaigns. The petition serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining the sanctity of places of worship and ensuring that they remain free from the influence of partisan politics.
In response to the petition, legal experts have pointed out the delicate balance between individual freedoms and the need to prevent electoral malpractices.
“While politicians are entitled to practice their faith, they should abstain from leveraging religious platforms to advance their political agendas, particularly during electoral seasons.”
-remarked one legal analyst.
The TNCC lawyers wing’s initiative has sparked discussions about the ethical boundaries of political campaigning and the responsibilities of elected officials. As the debate continues, all eyes are on the Election Commission to see how it will address this pressing issue and uphold the principles of fair and transparent elections.
In a bid to maintain a level playing field during the ongoing election campaign, the live broadcast of the Prime Minister’s meditation program has sparked a legal battle, raising concerns among opposition parties. A petition filed by the lawyers’ wing of TNCC highlights the potential disadvantage opposition parties might face due to the PM’s utilization of his official position during his visit to Vivekananda Rock. The petition urges the Election Commission of India (ECI) to intervene promptly to prevent any perceived misuse of power.
“The opposition parties may find themselves at a disadvantage due to the live broadcast of the PM’s meditation program.”
-reads the petition, underlining the urgency for immediate action to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
The focus is on ensuring a free and fair election environment, where all parties have an equal opportunity to convey their message to the electorate without any undue advantage for incumbents.
One of the primary concerns raised in the petition is the potential restriction on Hindu devotees and general tourists’ access to Vivekananda Rock during the PM’s visit. The petition seeks interim directions to the state authorities to refrain from obstructing visitors from May 30 to June 1, coinciding with the PM’s scheduled visit. It emphasizes the importance of upholding the rights of devotees and tourists, ensuring they are not unduly inconvenienced during this period.
Moreover, the petition highlights the economic ramifications of any potential disruptions caused by the PM’s visit. It calls upon the state to refrain from compelling business establishments, including shops, hotels, and restaurants, to close during the tourist influx expected during the PM’s visit to Kanyakumari and neighboring areas. This aspect underscores the broader impact on local businesses and the economy, particularly in the tourism sector, if stringent measures are imposed without due consideration.
Despite the petitioners’ efforts, they face a procedural hurdle as the final date for filing petitions has elapsed. However, they are urging the High Court to consider their representation for either Suo motu cognizance or public interest litigation, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the need for judicial intervention to address the concerns raised.
The legal dispute highlights the intricate balance between upholding the incumbent government’s prerogative to fulfill official responsibilities and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process. While the PM’s visit to Vivekananda Rock carries significance across cultural and spiritual dimensions, its timing during the election campaign has sparked a heated debate regarding the alleged misuse of official resources for political advantage.
