Chennai: Today (8th May): The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) filed a petition before the Madras High Court, urging it to direct the Election Commission of India (ECI) to address Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s alleged hate speeches during the ongoing election season. The TNCC claims that despite multiple complaints lodged against Modi, the ECI has only issued a show cause notice to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) instead of directly addressing the Prime Minister himself.

The plea attributes the responsibility for hate speeches to Mr. Modi as the “individual culprit.”
According to the plea, “Mr. Modi is solely responsible for these inflammatory remarks, derogative speeches, and divisive speeches. This leniency of the ECI sends a wrong signal to the citizens and undermines the integrity of our nation’s whole electoral process.”
The plea emphasizes that the ECI’s leniency in dealing with the matter sends a wrong signal to the citizens and undermines the integrity of the nation’s electoral process. The TNCC, through its President K Selvaperunthagai, presented the petition before the vacation bench of Justices AD Jagadish Chandira and R Kalaimathi.
However, the Bench advised the petitioner to have the matter officially numbered by the Registry first. The TNCC’s petition highlights that the Prime Minister has been making unsavory remarks against Muslims in multiple election meetings since April 21. It accuses the BJP of attempting to secure victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections through divisive campaigning along communal lines.

The petition specifically mentions Narendra Modi’s derogatory remarks labeling Muslims as “infiltrators” and those who “have more children.” Furthermore, it alleges that Modi has made misleading and derogatory remarks about the Congress party’s manifesto, calling for him to be restrained from making such comments.
The TNCC also registered its protest against Modi’s alleged statement that the opposition’s victory would result in Hindu wealth going into Muslim hands.
The TNCC president lodged a representation with the Chief Electoral Officer’s office in Chennai on May 1, urging immediate and decisive action against Modi’s “derogatory statements and communal rhetoric.”
However, no response was forthcoming. Consequently, the TNCC president approached the High Court, seeking directions from the ECI to demand an explanation from Modi.
The plea contends that “Mr. Modi’s derogatory remarks about specific communities such as Muslims, including his recent comments regarding the mangal-sutra and birth rates among Muslims, are not only disrespectful but also shameful and treacherous as they fuel communal tensions and sow division among our people. These communal tensions are not exclusive to the states among which the Prime Minister, Mr. Modi, has made these speeches, but rather, the blatant disrespect of Muslims was targeted at all the Muslims residing all over India. Mr. Modi is trying to create fear psychosis in the minds of the people and whip up communal passions. He wants Indian citizens among themselves to fight and shed blood in the streets of India to force the majority of people to vote for the BJP.”
