Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s Remarks on Judiciary Sparks Controversy

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has recently found himself at the center of a controversy following his remarks on alleged corruption within the judiciary. Advocate Shiv Charan Gupta has taken legal action, filing a plea in response to Gehlot’s statements, which he believes could potentially scandalize and undermine the judiciary’s reputation.

During a media interaction, Gehlot made a series of claims about the prevailing corruption in the judicial system. He was quoted saying,

“Aaj jo bataiye itna corruption ho raha hai judiciary ke andar. Itna bhayankar corruption hai, kai wakil log toh maine suna hai, likh ke le jaate hain judgment aur judgment wohi aata hai.”

This statement translates to:

“Today, the level of corruption within the judiciary is alarming. I’ve heard that several lawyers draft judgments and bring them to court, where they are then pronounced verbatim.”

In light of these statements, Advocate Gupta’s plea emphasizes the potential harm such remarks could inflict on the judiciary’s integrity. He has made a strong appeal to the Rajasthan High Court, urging it to take suo motu cognisance of Gehlot’s comments. Gupta believes that the Rajasthan High Court should invoke its jurisdiction under Article 215 of the Indian Constitution to address this matter.

But Gehlot’s comments weren’t limited to the judiciary. He also touched upon allegations of corruption that have been reportedly made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kailash Meghwal against Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal. Kailash Meghwal, who has previously served as the Speaker of the Rajasthan Assembly, reportedly labeled Arjun Ram Meghwal as

“corrupt No. 1.”

Addressing this, Gehlot stated,

“I have come to know that there was significant corruption during Arjun Ram Meghwal’s tenure. However, the matter seems to have been suppressed. These individuals have managed to obtain a stay from the High Court.”

The unfolding controversy has cast a shadow over both the judiciary and the political landscape of Rajasthan. It has raised pressing questions about the transparency, integrity, and accountability of the system. As the situation develops, all eyes will be on the judiciary’s response and the potential repercussions for those involved.
