BCCI refuses to mediate with Champak magazine in a trademark dispute over the IPL’s robotic dog.
Delhi High Court to hear the case again in September.

New Delhi: Today, on July 9, in a recent development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) told the Delhi High Court that it does not wish to go for mediation with Delhi Press Patra Prakashan, the publisher of the popular children’s magazine Champak.

The dispute is about the name ‘Champak’ being used for a robotic dog that was seen during the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches.

The matter was heard by Justice Saurabh Banerjee, who has now posted the case for further hearing in September.

The controversy began when Delhi Press Patra Prakashan objected to the use of the name ‘Champak’ by the BCCI for a robotic dog introduced as a part of IPL entertainment.

Champak is a well-known Indian children’s magazine that has been in publication for several decades and is widely recognised across the country.

The publisher claimed that using the same name for a robotic dog could harm their brand and cause confusion among the public, especially among children and parents who have long associated the name with their magazine.

During the court proceedings, BCCI made it clear that it had no intention of resolving the matter through mediation.

Instead, they preferred to contest the issue legally. According to the BCCI’s statement in court, they are “not willing to enter into mediation” with the magazine publisher over the use of the name ‘Champak’.

This stand by the cricket board has now pushed the case to be examined more deeply, as both sides are expected to submit detailed arguments and evidence in the upcoming hearing scheduled for September.

Justice Saurabh Banerjee, after hearing both parties, has decided to take up the matter for further consideration in the coming months.
