NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Friday (25th Oct) addressed a petition regarding the non-functional fare meters in autorickshaws.
The bench, comprising Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, instructed the Delhi government’s transport department to promptly address the concerns raised by petitioner Anand Mishra, directing the department to act on his representation within three weeks.

Mishra contended that fare meters have remained non-operational since 2018, and despite the authorities’ responsibility under Rule 74 of the Delhi Motor Vehicle Rules, 1993, no corrective action has been taken. The rule mandates the installation and proper functioning of fare meters in autorickshaws and taxis.
The court emphasized the need for strict adherence to the fare meter rules and directed the Delhi government to conduct random on-ground inspections to ensure compliance with the revised fares.
In January 2023, the Transport Department had issued a notification revising the fares for autorickshaws and taxis, which operators in the National Capital Territory of Delhi were required to implement. The court underscored the importance of ensuring that these new rates are reflected in meter readings during rides.
