Today, On 10th July, The Madhya Pradesh High Court reserved its verdict on NTA’s appeal against a re-test for NEET-UG 2025 candidates affected by power failure; the bench remarked, “Only one plane crashed, but thousands fly every day.”

The Madhya Pradesh High Court reserved its judgment on the NTA’s appeal regarding a single judge’s order to conduct a re-test of the NEET-UG 2025 exam for candidates impacted by a electricity failure at the centers in Indore and Ujjain.
The Bench comprising of Justice Vivek Rusia and Justice Binod Kumar Dwivedi heard the matter.
While delivering its verdict court stated,
“Only one plane crashed, but thousands fly every day,”
The division bench set-aside a previous single-judge order that had instructed the NTA to conduct a re-exam.
This ruling followed a recent decision by the MP High Court to stay the single judge’s directive regarding the re-exam for the National Eligibility-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2025.
The court acknowledged the disturbances faced by the students, expressing understanding for the stress involved in such situations.
The court remarked,
“Disturbance to the students is not disputed; we also understand the issue of stress faced by the students in such a situation. We have full sympathy for students. Many have taken drop also, we understand their problem. But see, 22 Lakhs students had appeared, all of them can’t be selected. Hard Luck Bad Luck. Only one plane crashed (referring to the Ahmedabad Air India crash), but thousands fly every day. One girl missed the flight by ten minutes, but she was saved. So it happens,”
A report from Solicitor General Tushar Mehta indicated that candidates had sufficient natural light to complete the exam during the one-hour power outage at 19 centers, noting that diesel generators were available at some locations.
In contrast, Advocate Rupesh Kumar, representing the students, argued that the lighting was inadequate to read the questions due to the storm and rain, asserting that a re-exam was warranted under exceptional circumstances.
The Solicitor General countered this argument, highlighting that one candidate from the affected center achieved an All India Rank (AIR) 2, with several others scoring over 600 marks, suggesting that the power outage did not significantly hinder performance.

He noted,
“If grace marks are to be given, who should be given the benefit of it? If AIR 2 is also given grace marks, he would be AIR 1,”
The NEET UG 2025 results were announced on June 15, with approximately 12.36 lakh candidates qualifying for admission to various medical and dental colleges across India.
