New Delhi: On Monday (March 11), the Delhi High Court granted Harish Yadav, a convict under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, a parole of three weeks. Justice Anoop Kumar Mendiratta allows Yadav the opportunity to amass funds to settle the fine associated with his conviction and to reconnect with his family.

Yadav, who has nearly completed a 10-year sentence, was facing an additional six months of imprisonment due to his inability to pay the requisite fine. His earlier plea for parole was rejected as it lacked specificity under Rule 1211 of the Delhi Prison Rules, 2018, which did not state exceptional circumstances for relief.
However, Justice Mendiratta found merit in Yadav’s case, considering his speedy completion of the sentence, commendable behavior in prison, and lack of misuse of emergency parole granted in 2021.
As per the court’s directive, Yadav will need to furnish a personal bond of Rs 25,000 for his release, with instructions to surrender to the jail superintendent immediately upon the expiration of the parole period.
