Calcutta High Court will hear a PIL seeking to stop the foundation stone for a mosque modelled on the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad. The plea argues that holding the event on December 6 could disturb communal harmony and warrants urgent judicial intervention.

A public interest litigation (PIL) seeking to stay TMC MLA Humayun Kabir’s plan to lay the foundation stone for a mosque modeled after the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad district on December 6 is set to be heard by the Calcutta High Court on Friday.
Kabir, who represents Bharatpur, was suspended by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Thursday.
The petitioner’s attorney, Sabyasachi Chatterjee, brought the PIL to the attention of a division bench led by Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul, requesting a stay on the foundation-laying event and any political involvement in the construction of religious structures.
Chatterjee indicated that the division bench is likely to address the PIL on Friday.
Kabir has attracted attention in recent years for his controversial remarks on various issues, including the internal dynamics of his party.
He had declared that the foundation for the proposed mosque would be laid in Beldanga on December 6, the anniversary of the Babri mosque’s demolition in Ayodhya in 1992.
In announcing Kabir’s suspension, senior TMC leader Firhad Hakim stated that Kabir’s actions constituted “gross indiscipline at a time when the party was working to maintain peace and communal harmony in the state.”
