The Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued notices to members of the Mewar royal family in an ongoing inheritance dispute involving the properties of late royal Arvind Singh Mewar.

Justice Subramonium Prasad issued notice to Padmaja Kumari Parmar and her sister Bhargavi Kumari Mewar on a petition filed by their brother Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, who is seeking control and administration of their late father’s assets. The Court also issued notice to their mother Vijayraj Kumari Mewar and to the State of Rajasthan.

While issuing notice, the Court said,

“I am issuing notice in the matter. You file your objections,”

directing the respondents to place their responses on record.

The dispute arises from a long-standing family disagreement over the inheritance and control of properties belonging to Arvind Singh Mewar, a member of the erstwhile Mewar royal family of Udaipur.

According to Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, his father executed a will in February 2025, under which Lakshyaraj was named the sole heir to his father’s self-acquired properties. This will is being strongly contested by his sisters Padmaja Kumari Parmar and Bhargavi Kumari Mewar, who have questioned its legality and validity.

Both Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar and Padmaja Kumari Parmar have filed separate testamentary petitions before the Delhi High Court seeking letters of administration over their father’s estate. On Tuesday, the Court issued notice specifically in the petition filed by Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar.

During the hearing, Justice Prasad observed that he may take up Padmaja Kumari Parmar’s petition after deciding Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar’s case. This prompted strong submissions from Padmaja Kumari’s counsel.

Senior Advocate Arvind Nigam, appearing for Padmaja Kumari Parmar, argued that both petitions should be heard together as they relate to the same will and the same set of properties. Stressing that the burden lies on Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar to prove the will, Nigam told the Court,

“They are relying on the document which they purport to be a will. Onus is on them to establish the validity of the will in the proceedings that they have initiated now. If they fail, you are saying we should come at that stage. But they are here, and we are here. Both these matters can be tried together,”

and cited multiple judgments in support of his submissions.

Senior Advocate Sandeep Sethi, representing Bhargavi Kumari Mewar, also opposed Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar’s claim and submitted that the will relied upon by him is illegal.

On the other hand, Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar was represented by Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar, who challenged the maintainability of Padmaja Kumari Parmar’s petition and argued that her plea could not be entertained at this stage.

After briefly hearing all sides, the Court listed the matter for further hearing on February 12, when Rajiv Nayar is expected to advance detailed submissions on behalf of Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar.

A large team of senior advocates and lawyers appeared for the parties. Senior Advocates Arvind Nigam, Suhail Dutt and Abhishek Malhotra, along with advocates Anuradha Dutt, Chaitanya Kaushik, Suman Yadav, Kunal Dutt, Raghav Dutt, Avinash K Singh, Seema Mehta, Vidhi Uppal, Saurabh Pal, Kartikay Dutta and Anukriti Trivedi represented Padmaja Kumari Parmar.

Bhargavi Kumari Mewar was represented by Senior Advocates Sandeep Sethi and Arun Kathpalia, assisted by advocates Bani Brar, Tahira Kathpalia and Aditya Dhupar.

Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar was represented by Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar along with advocates Rashmi Kant, Rishi Agrawala, Rohan Dakshini, Pratham Vir Agarwal, Jay Sanklecha, Anuja Bhansali, Urvi Gupta, Nilay Gupta and Prabhav Bahuguna.

The case is now set to continue before the Delhi High Court, with the core issue being the validity of the alleged will and who will ultimately control the valuable Mewar family properties.
