Today, On 23rd July, The Delhi High Court ordered a CBI investigation into the death of Faizan, a 23-year-old Muslim man who was beaten by Delhi Police and forced to sing the national anthem, as seen in a viral video clip. Faizan’s mother claims he was beaten in police custody, which ultimately caused his death.

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court, On Tuesday, directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to examine the case of a 23-year-old man who died after being beaten by Delhi Police officers with lathis during the 2020 Delhi riots.

A viral video on social media depicted the police beating the deceased, Faizan, with sticks and compelling him to sing the national anthem.

Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani issued the order to transfer the investigation from the Delhi Police to the CBI.

The Court issued its ruling on the petition filed by Faizan’s mother, Kismatun.

Kismatun’s petition claimed that her son, Faizan, brutally beaten by police officers in Kardampuri and subsequently taken into illegal custody at Jyoti Nagar Police Station, where he denied medical care, resulting in his death.

She requested the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and a court-monitored investigation into the incident and the involvement of the police officials.

Advocate Vrinda Grover, representing Kismatun, argued that the Delhi Police’s investigation into Faizan’s death was biased and failed to scrutinize the role of the Station House Officer (SHO) at Jyoti Nagar, where the alleged assault occurred.

Grover contended that officers at the Kiri Nagar Police Station tampering with records, yet these officers remained outside the scope of the investigation.

She also mentioned that without a court-monitored probe, the investigation could be prolonged indefinitely and may never reach a conclusion.

Conversely, the Delhi Police informed the High Court that they were investigating the incident but required more time to forensically examine certain videos and evidence.

The police stated that identifying all the officers in the viral video challenging because their faces were not clearly visible.

At the request of the Delhi Police, some of the case hearings conducted in private chambers.
