CHENNAI: Today(on 26th June),The Madras High Court (MHC) has granted an extension of four more months to the Principal Sessions Judge (PSJ) to complete the trial in a high-profile money laundering case involving former Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji. This case, registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) last year, has been under intense scrutiny.
Initially, Senthil Balaji’s bail petition was dismissed by Justice N Anand Venkatesh on February 28. At that time, Justice Venkatesh noted that since Balaji had been in custody for about eight months, it was imperative to expedite the trial.
The Special Court handling cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) was therefore instructed –
“to conduct the trial on a day-to-day basis and complete it within three months if possible.”
As the three-month deadline approached without the trial commencing, Principal Sessions Judge S Alli reached out to the Madras High Court, seeking additional time to complete the trial. In response to this request, Justice G Jayachandran reviewed the situation and decided to grant the requested extension. The court has now allowed an additional four months for the PSJ to finalize the trial. Furthermore, Justice Jayachandran directed Senthil Balaji to cooperate fully with the judicial proceedings.

Balaji, a senior leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), was arrested on June 14, 2023, by the Enforcement Directorate. The arrest was related to a money laundering case stemming from a cash-for-jobs scam that occurred during his tenure as the Transport Minister in a previous All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) regime.
The case against Balaji has garnered significant attention due to its political implications and the serious nature of the allegations. The ED’s investigation has focused on the financial transactions and the alleged misuse of power by Balaji to facilitate the scam.
Justice Venkatesh’s initial directive aimed to ensure swift justice in the matter, emphasizing the need for a prompt resolution given the prolonged period Balaji had already spent in custody. However, the complexities involved in such high-profile cases often necessitate additional time for thorough examination and trial proceedings.
The court’s decision to extend the trial period highlights the judiciary’s commitment to a comprehensive review of all evidence and testimonies, ensuring that the trial is conducted with due diligence. This approach is crucial in maintaining the integrity of the legal process and upholding justice.
As the trial progresses, all eyes will be on the Madras High Court and the proceedings against Senthil Balaji. The outcome of this case could have significant ramifications not only for Balaji but also for the broader political landscape in Tamil Nadu.
