CHENNAI: Today (2nd July): The Madras High Court directed the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry (BCTNP) to conduct an election for the Women Lawyers Association (WLA) by September 30, 2024. The court has ordered the BCTNP to appoint an election officer and necessary staff to assist in organizing the election.

The Division Bench comprising Justices S.M. Subramaniam and C. Kumarappan instructed the current office-bearers of the association to transfer all information related to the day-to-day administration, including the complete membership list, to the secretary of BCTNP within a fortnight.

The current office-bearers of the WLA have been instructed to hand over all relevant details, including the member list and administrative records, to the BCTNP secretary within two weeks.

The BCTNP must then finalize the voter list, appoint the election officer, and hold the elections as per the association’s bylaws. The court stressed that future elections should be conducted in a timely manner to avoid any delays.

If the elections are not held by the deadline, the BCTNP can appoint a woman special officer to conduct the elections within four months. The court has also ordered strict compliance with the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975.
