UTTAR PRADESH: The Allahabad High Court on Monday(12th August), adjourned the hearing in the ongoing Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah dispute after it was revealed that certain crucial documents related to the suits had not been exchanged between the two litigant parties. This delay in the exchange of documents prompted the court to defer the hearing, which will be rescheduled for a later date.
Justice Mayank Kumar Jain is presiding over this highly sensitive case. The case has attracted considerable attention due to its historical and religious implications. The dispute centers around the ownership and possession of the land on which the Shahi Idgah Masjid stands, a mosque that dates back to the Mughal era. The Hindu litigants allege that this mosque was constructed by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb after demolishing a temple at the birthplace of Lord Krishna, a site revered by millions of Hindus.
On August 1, the Allahabad High Court had previously ruled that the suits brought forward by the Hindu side were maintainable, thereby dismissing the objections raised by the Muslim side. This ruling was a significant development in the case, as it allowed the court to proceed with the framing of issues in the dispute. The court had initially scheduled August 12 as the date for framing these issues, a process that is critical for the further progression of the case.
The suits in question have been filed with the aim of obtaining possession of the land currently occupied by the Shahi Idgah Masjid. The Hindu litigants seek the removal of the mosque structure and the restoration of the temple that they claim once stood at the site. In addition to these demands, the litigants have also requested a permanent injunction to prevent any future construction or activities that could interfere with the temple’s restoration.

The controversy surrounding the Shahi Idgah mosque in Mathura has its roots in historical events, specifically the period during the reign of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. It is alleged that Aurangzeb ordered the demolition of the original Krishna Janmabhoomi temple and subsequently constructed the Shahi Idgah mosque in its place. This claim has been a source of tension between Hindu and Muslim communities for many years, and the current legal proceedings represent an attempt to resolve the dispute through the judicial system.
On Monday, when the matter was brought before the court at 2 pm, it became evident that the pleadings had not been exchanged in some of the suits involved in the case. This procedural lapse led to the adjournment of the hearing. The court acknowledged the importance of ensuring that all relevant documents are properly exchanged between the parties before proceeding further.
As a result, the hearing was postponed, and a new date will be determined in due course.
