Karnataka High Court Hearings Stopped: Bengaluru Advocates Protest Against Transfer of 4 HC Judges

BENGALURU: The Advocates Association in Bengaluru decided not to work for one hour. This was done to protest against the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation to transfer four judges from the Karnataka High Court to other High Courts in the country.

Because of this protest, many court hearings were stopped. The Bar leaders informed the judges about their decision to stay away from work for one hour. After this, many benches stopped the hearings. Especially, Court numbers 7, 8, and 21 did not hear any cases during this time.

This protest happened after the Supreme Court Collegium made an important announcement on April 21. The Collegium recommended the transfer of four Karnataka High Court judges. The names of the judges and the High Courts they have been recommended to are:

  • Justice Krishna Dixit: Orissa High Court
  • Justice K Natarajan: Kerala High Court
  • Justice Hemant Chandangoudar: Madras High Court
  • Justice Sanjay Gowda: Gujarat High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium shared this information on its official website. It also gave a reason for the transfer of these judges.

The Collegium said the decision was taken

“to infuse inclusivity and diversity at the level of High Courts and to strengthen the quality of administration of justice”.

However, this decision was not accepted happily by many advocates. It caused serious concern among lawyers. The President of the Advocates Association at the Karnataka High Court’s Dharwad Bench and the Advocates Association, Bengaluru had earlier written a letter to the Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna. In the letter, they clearly opposed the transfer of these judges.

Later, the Advocates Association of Bengaluru passed a formal resolution. They decided that all members will stop work for one hour as a peaceful way to protest against the decision.

This event has become a major talking point in the legal community, especially in Karnataka. The transfer of senior judges and the response from the lawyers shows the growing concern about how such judicial decisions are made.
