The Karnataka HC has temporarily restrained the trial court from framing charges against Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Revanna, who faces abduction allegations. Justice M. Nagaprasanna stated the court may hear arguments but cannot frame charges until January 30, 2025, when Revanna’s petition will be reviewed, amidst ongoing legal challenges for the party.

Karnataka: The Karnataka High Court on Friday (Jan 17th) issued a temporary order restraining the trial court from framing charges against Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Revanna, who is accused of abducting a woman. The High Court’s decision comes as a relief for Revanna, pending the hearing of his quashing petition.
Justice M. Nagaprasanna stated that while the special court in Bengaluru can continue hearing arguments in the case, it “must not frame charges against him until January 30, 2025,” when the High Court will take up Revanna’s quashing plea.

The interim order, passed while adjourning the hearing, said,
“The learned Senior Counsel for the petitioner (Revanna) submits that the matter is at the stage of hearing before charge and hearing is on. The concerned court is permitted to hear the matter at the stage of arguments before charge but shall not frame the charge till January 30, 2025.”
Background of the Case
The case against HD Revanna involves the alleged abduction of his former domestic help. The matter is also connected to serious allegations of sexual abuse against his son, Prajwal Revanna, a suspended JD(S) leader.
HD Revanna currently faces two criminal cases, one alleging sexual assault and another alleging kidnapping. In May 2025, he was granted bail in both cases, enabling him to defend against the charges without immediate incarceration.
High Court’s Next Steps
The High Court’s decision to restrain the trial court from framing charges highlights the complexity of the case. The upcoming hearing on January 30 will determine the course of Revanna’s quashing petition and whether the trial court can proceed further.
This legal battle adds to the challenges faced by the JD(S) leadership, as allegations involving high-profile members of the party continue to attract public and legal scrutiny.
