BENGALURU: Today(on 28th August), the Karnataka High Court dismissed the plea filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) seeking the cancellation of bail granted to Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Revanna. Revanna, who stands accused of abducting a woman, has been a prominent figure in the ongoing legal proceedings.
Court Upholds Bail for HD Revanna
The decision to uphold the bail was passed by Justice M Nagaprasanna, who reaffirmed the trial court’s earlier ruling from May 13, which had granted Revanna bail. The High Court’s judgment marks a crucial moment in the case, particularly as the SIT had argued vigorously for the cancellation of the bail.
Additionally, the High Court granted bail to six other individuals accused in the same case. The conditions for their release included the execution of bail bonds amounting to Rs. 5 lakh each.
Senior Advocate Ravivarma Kumar, representing the SIT, presented a compelling argument to the court.
He emphasized the gravity of the accusations against Revanna, stating that-
“Bail should not have been granted in a case of this nature.”
Kumar stressed that the trial court had erred in its decision to grant bail and insisted that the High Court should revoke the bail.
Kumar’s argument centered around the belief that the bail had been granted incorrectly, a point he reiterated, urging the court to cancel the bail order. His stance reflected the seriousness with which the SIT viewed the allegations against Revanna.
On the opposing side, Senior Advocate CV Nagesh, representing HD Revanna, offered a robust defense. Nagesh argued that the prosecution’s request was not merely for the cancellation of bail but rather a challenge to the very order that granted it. He pointed out that the charges of kidnapping could not be sustained as the alleged victim was not a minor, a critical element in such cases.

Nagesh further argued that the charge of abduction did not hold up under scrutiny, as there was no element of deceit involved.
He elaborated on this point, stating-
“She was a maid in the house and was called without any deceit, threat, or detention.”
thereby suggesting that the actions in question did not meet the legal criteria for abduction.
In addition, Nagesh addressed the allegations of rape and sexual assault linked to the case, which involve Revanna’s son, Prajwal Revanna.
He clarified that –
“There was no indication that the domestic help, the victim of rape and sexual assault in the Prajwal Revanna case, was abducted at the direction of HD Revanna or his wife.”
distancing his client from the more severe accusations related to the case.
Background of the Case
The case against HD Revanna has garnered significant attention, largely due to its association with allegations of sexual abuse against his son, Prajwal Revanna, who is a suspended JD(S) leader. The charges against Prajwal include the circulation of over 2,900 videos depicting the sexual assault of multiple women, which were widely shared on various platforms, including social media.
HD Revanna himself is embroiled in two separate criminal cases—one involving allegations of sexual assault and the other pertaining to allegations of kidnapping. Despite the seriousness of the charges, Revanna was granted bail in both cases on May 13, a decision that has now been upheld by the Karnataka High Court.
While HD Revanna has secured his release on bail, his son Prajwal Revanna remains behind bars. The charges against Prajwal have kept him in prison as the investigations continue into the extensive sexual abuse scandal that has rocked the state.
