Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew has been designated as the Acting Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, stepping into the role from November 2, 2023. This transition comes in the wake of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee’s retirement on November 1, 2023.

The Ministry of Law and Justice, in its formal proclamation, articulated,

“In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint, Shri Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew, Judge of the Meghalaya High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from 02.11.2023 consequent upon the retirement of Shri Justice Sanjib Banerjee, Chief Justice, Meghalaya High Court on 01.11.2023.”

Justice Thangkhiew’s legal journey has been marked by significant milestones. After securing his LL.B. Degree from Delhi University in 1990, he took the step to enroll as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh in the years 1990-1991. His exemplary contributions to the realm of law were acknowledged when he was

“designated Senior Advocate by the Gauhati High Court in August 2010.”

His commitment to the judiciary was further cemented when he

“took oath as a judge of Meghalaya High Court on November 19, 2018.”

It’s worth noting that this isn’t Justice Thangkhiew’s first tenure in such a pivotal role; he had previously donned the mantle of

“Acting Chief Justice of the High Court in a short stint back in November 2019.”

With Justice Thangkhiew at the helm, the Meghalaya High Court is set to benefit from his vast experience and profound legal acumen.
