
Dr. Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, the senior-most puisne Judge of the Orissa High Court, has been officially designated as its Acting Chief Justice. This appointment, set to commence from October 4, 2023, was notified by the Centre in anticipation of the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice Subhasis Talapatra, scheduled for October 3, 2023.
Justice Sarangi’s academic credentials are noteworthy. He completed his LL.B. and LL.M. degrees from Madhusudan Law College, Cuttack. Further enhancing his academic portfolio, he secured a Ph.D. in Law from Sambalpur University.
Initiating his legal career in December 1985, Justice Sarangi was enrolled in the rolls of the Bar. He then had the privilege of joining the Chamber of the renowned Late Gangadhar Rath, who was the former Advocate General of Odisha. Justice Sarangi’s legal expertise was frequently sought after in both the Orissa High Court and the Supreme Court.
Throughout his extensive advocacy career, which spanned almost three decades, Justice Sarangi handled a plethora of cases. These covered diverse legal domains, including
“civil, criminal, constitutional, revenue, tax, labour, service, mining, education, electricity, insurance, banking and elections matters.”
For his exceptional contributions and unwavering commitment to upholding professional ethics, Justice Sarangi was conferred with the
“Haricharan Mukherjee Memorial Award”
in 2002. This accolade was presented by the then Chief Justice P.K. Balsubramanyam, recognizing his outstanding performance.
On June 20, 2013, Justice Sarangi’s legal journey took a significant turn when he was
“elevated and sworn in as a Judge of the High Court.”
As he prepares to assume the esteemed role of Acting Chief Justice, the legal fraternity of the Orissa High Court looks forward to his continued leadership and dedication.
