The Central government has approved the appointment of Justices Venkatachari Lakshminarayanan and Periyasamy Vadamala as permanent judges of the Madras High Court, following a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium. This decision aims to bolster the judiciary amid ongoing vacancies, contributing to faster justice delivery amidst a significant pending case load.

New Delhi: The Central government on Wednesday (Feb 12th) approved the appointment of two additional judges of the Madras High Court as permanent judges. The decision was announced by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Twitter.
The judges who have been granted permanent status are:
- Justice Venkatachari Lakshminarayanan
- Justice Periyasamy Vadamala
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended their appointment as permanent judges on February 5, and the Central government has now given its final approval.
As of February 1, 2024, the Madras High Court is functioning with 65 judges. However, the sanctioned strength of the court is 75 judges, meaning there are still 10 vacancies that need to be filled.
This appointment aims to strengthen the judicial system and reduce the pending case load in the Madras High Court.
With judicial vacancies being a major challenge across India, the appointment of permanent judges is crucial for ensuring swift and efficient justice delivery.
