“Corruption in the judiciary.”
Earlier, during an interaction with journalists in Jaipur, Gehlot made a statement that raised eyebrows in the legal community. He commented,
“Corruption is rampant in the judiciary today. I have heard that some lawyers themselves take the judgement in writing and the same judgement is pronounced.”
This statement led to a significant backlash from the legal fraternity. Lawyers in Jodhpur, deeply offended by the Chief Minister’s remarks, not only called for a one-day strike but also initiated legal action against him. The PIL, which sought contempt proceedings against Gehlot, was filed by a local advocate named Shivcharan Gupta.
However, in the wake of the controversy, Gehlot was quick to clarify his position. He emphasized that his statement did not mirror his “personal opinion” and further added that he has always held the judiciary in high regard and believed in its integrity.
The matter was brought before a division bench of the Rajasthan High Court, presided over by Justice MM Shrivastava and Justice Ashutosh Kumar. After deliberations, the court decided to issue the show-cause notice to the Chief Minister, instructing him to furnish a response within a span of three weeks. The case is slated for a hearing on October 3.
This incident underscores the sensitive nature of remarks concerning the judiciary and the potential legal implications that can arise from them.
