Jammu and Kashmir High Court 3 Additional Judges Made Permanent: Union Law Minister Meghwal

The Central Government Today (March 10) approved the permanent appointment of three judges—Justice Wasim Sadiq Nargal, Justice Rajesh Sekhri, and Justice Mohammad Yousuf Wani—to the Jammu & Kashmir High Court, strengthening the judiciary amidst 10 vacant positions.

Jammu and Kashmir High Court 3 Additional Judges Made Permanent: Union Law Minister Meghwal

NEW DELHI: The Central Government has given approval for the appointment of three additional judges of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court as permanent judges. This decision was taken on Monday.

The three judges who have now become permanent judges are:

  • Justice Wasim Sadiq Nargal
  • Justice Rajesh Sekhri
  • Justice Mohammad Yousuf Wani

Earlier, the Supreme Court Collegium had given its approval for this appointment on March 5. The Collegium had recommended that these three additional judges of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh be made permanent judges.

Today, the Central Government officially confirmed all three names.

Justice Wasim Sadiq Nargal has created history by becoming the first Muslim judge from the Jammu region to serve in the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. His journey to this position began when the High Court Collegium recommended his name in August 2017.

Later, in April 2018, the Supreme Court Collegium also approved his judgeship.

His appointment as an additional judge was officially announced on June 1, 2022, and he took his oath on June 3, 2022.

Justice Rajesh Sekhri was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court on July 29, 2024. His legal career started after he completed his LLB from the Faculty of Law, University of Jammu in 1989. In 1995, he joined the judicial service as a Munsiff judge.

Over the years, he has worked in several positions, including as a Sub Judge and Chief Judicial Magistrate in Rajouri and Kargil.

Later, in 2008, he was promoted to District and Sessions Judge. Before being recommended for a position in the High Court, he served as a judicial member of the J&K Special Tribunal Jammu.

Justice Mohammad Yousuf Wani started his legal career in 1990 and later became a Munsiff judge in December 1997. He was promoted to Sub Judge in 2000 and later became a District & Sessions Judge in 2008. He has held several key judicial positions, including serving as a Judicial Member of the J&K Special Tribunal in Srinagar.

His appointment as an additional judge of the High Court was officially announced on March 21, 2024.

The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh is supposed to have 25 judges, but currently, it has only 15 judges. This means there are still 10 vacant positions that need to be filled.
