RANCHI: Hemant Soren, the former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, his judicial custody has been prolonged by two additional weeks. This decision comes amidst an ongoing investigation into a land scam involving approximately 8.46 acres of land situated in the Bargai region. Soren, along with eight other individuals, finds himself entangled in this legal debacle, detained under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Today(on 30th May),The decision to extend the judicial custody was reached after a virtual appearance by Hemant Soren during a court session conducted via video conferencing.

With the next hearing also scheduled to be held through virtual means, set for June 13th.

“This is a procedural matter, and we are providing complete cooperation to the authorities,”

Hemant Soren, a prominent political figure in Jharkhand, has been under judicial custody since February 1st, when initial charges were brought against him in connection with the land scam. The allegations have cast a shadow over his political career, prompting widespread speculation and public scrutiny.

The land scam, which revolves around irregularities in the acquisition and ownership of land parcels in the Bargai region, has garnered significant attention from law enforcement agencies and the media. Investigations into the matter have revealed a complex web of transactions and purported misappropriation of land resources, raising concerns about corruption and malfeasance.

Despite the legal challenges he faces, Hemant Soren remains steadfast in his assertion of innocence, maintaining that he has been wrongly implicated in the land scam.

“I have complete faith in the judicial system, and I firmly believe that justice will prevail.”

The Jharkhand High Court has taken a decisive step by directing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to provide a response to a bail petition filed by former Chief Minister, Soren. This directive comes as Soren contests the charges leveled against him, asserting that they are politically motivated and lack substantial evidence.

Arrested on January 31st in connection with the alleged land scam, Soren has been vocal in his defense, maintaining that the accusations are unfounded. Represented by senior advocate Kapil Sibal, Soren has vehemently argued against the validity of the charges, labeling them as baseless and devoid of merit. The court, acknowledging the gravity of the matter, has slated the next hearing for June 10th, marking a crucial juncture in the legal proceedings.

The controversy revolves around alleged tampering of land documents concerning a plot in Ranchi, the capital city.
