A bench led by Chief Justice Manmohan issued notices to the Delhi government, the Centre, and the Lieutenant Governor (LG) regarding the public interest litigation filed by the lawmakers.

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday(27th Nov) directed the AAP government to respond to a petition filed by seven BJP MPs from the city, seeking the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in Delhi.

A bench led by Chief Justice Manmohan issued notices to the Delhi government, the Centre, and the Lieutenant Governor (LG) regarding the public interest litigation filed by the lawmakers.

“Issue notice. Counsel for the respondents requests and is granted time to submit replies in affidavits,” the bench, which also included Justice Manmeet PS Arora, stated.

The case is scheduled for further hearing on December 11.

The petitioners Harsh Malhotra, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, Praveen Khandelwal, Yogendra Chandolia, Manoj Tiwari, Kamaljeet Sehrawat, and Bansuri Swaraj argued that residents of the capital are grappling with high healthcare costs, forcing many to borrow money or sell assets during medical emergencies.

They pointed out that Delhi is the only Union Territory where the AB-PMJAY scheme, which offers essential health coverage of Rs 5 lakh to underprivileged citizens, has not yet been implemented, leaving many without vital healthcare access.

Swaraj represented the petitioners in court.

Emphasizing that “political differences must be set aside” for the welfare of Delhi’s residents, the petitioners urged the court to direct the Delhi government and its health department to implement the AB-PMJAY scheme.
