The High Court Bar Association called for the appointment of local lawyers as judges. The association is urging that qualified local practitioners be considered for judicial positions. They believe this would better reflect the local legal community and enhance the judiciary’s understanding of regional issues.

In a significant move to address judicial appointments, a delegation from the High Court Bar Association recently met with India’s Union Law Minister, Arjun Ram Meghwal, in New Delhi to discuss the urgent issue of vacant judge positions and other challenges currently facing the judiciary.
During the meeting, the delegation submitted a detailed memorandum emphasizing that judicial appointments should prioritize lawyers who are actively practicing at the Allahabad High Court’s principal bench and its Lucknow bench.
The proposal argues that selecting judges from within the local legal community would ensure a stronger grasp of regional legal issues and maintain continuity in judicial proceedings, rather than appointing lawyers from other states who may lack this contextual understanding.
The memorandum from the High Court Bar Association also outlined several other key demands. These included the expedited enactment of the Advocate Protection Act, which aims to enhance the safety and security of legal professionals.
The association also called for the implementation of medical insurance provisions for advocates and the completion and furnishing of chambers in a newly constructed 12-story building designated for legal professionals.

Furthermore, the delegation requested financial support for the development of a state-of-the-art library, which would include 500 computers and a comprehensive collection of legal resources.
Rajesh Khare, the Senior Vice President of the High Court Bar, noted that Minister Meghwal responded positively to the delegation’s concerns and directed Rajkumar Goyal, the Principal Secretary of Justice, to take the necessary actions to address their requests. In a gesture of goodwill, the minister’s wife also presented the delegation members with a book authored by Arjun Ram Meghwal during the meeting.
