Ahmedabad: In a strange and shocking incident, a video has gone viral on social media where a man is seen attending an online Gujarat High Court hearing while sitting on a toilet.

This unusual event happened on June 20 before the Bench of Justice Nirzar S Desai.

At the start of the video, the man, logged in as ‘Sarmad Battery’, is seen wearing a Bluetooth earphone around his neck. At first, only his face is visible, but later, he places his phone at a distance.

Then, it becomes very clear that he is sitting on a toilet and is apparently relieving himself.

The video does not stop there. It also shows the man cleaning himself after using the toilet and then walking out of the washroom. After that, he disappears from the screen for a few moments. Later, he is seen again, this time in a different room.

According to the court records, this man was attending the hearing as a respondent in a case where a party had filed a request to quash (cancel) a First Information Report (FIR). Interestingly, this man was actually the complainant in that same criminal case. However, as both sides reached a peaceful settlement, the court agreed to quash the FIR.

This is not the first time such inappropriate behaviour has happened during virtual court hearings in India.

In April, the Gujarat High Court had taken strict action and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on a person who was caught smoking a cigarette while appearing for his case via video conferencing.

Likewise, in March, a Delhi court also took a serious step by summoning a person who was seen smoking a cigarette during his video appearance in court.

These types of incidents are raising serious concerns about the lack of respect and basic court etiquette during online hearings, which became common during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though the courts are virtual, the dignity of the institution must still be respected.
