Forged Result | Punjab & Haryana High Court Raps Law Student Over Fake Panjab University LL.B. Degree

A student’s plea before the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking his LL.B. degree that the result notification he relied on was forged. What began as a routine petition turned into a cautionary tale about misplaced trust, academic misconduct, and the consequences of taking shortcuts. The Court ultimately disposed of the case after the student admitted his mistake and expressed genuine remorse.

Background

The student approached the Court claiming that he had completed his three-year LL.B. course in May 2023 from Panjab University, Chandigarh. Despite fulfilling the academic requirements, he alleged that the University had failed to release his degree and mark sheets. His plea was grounded on a notification dated 25.11.2024 (Annexure P-1), purportedly showing his successful completion of the course.

During the hearing on August 2, Panjab University, represented by Advocate Akshay Kumar Geol, submitted a shocking revelation to Justice Harsimran Singh Sethi. The University clarified that the result notification the student had attached was a forged document. Not only were the signatures on it suspicious, but the records also showed that the student had not even appeared for the examination in question

The Petitioner’s Defence

Faced with the revelation, the student, represented by Advocate Brijesh, did not contest the facts. Instead, he stated that he had been misled by another student, allegedly a former Vice President of the Panjab University Campus Student Council (PUCSC) in 2019. He pleaded ignorance of the document’s forged nature and expressed remorse for filing the petition.

Court’s Verdict

Taking into account the student’s submission and repentance, the Court chose not to pursue any further punitive action. Justice Sethi, while disposing of the case, recorded the petitioner’s apology and his undertaking not to repeat such conduct.

“Learned counsel for the petitioner submits that the petitioner repent the filing of the present petition on the basis of the forged Notification dated 25.11.2024 (Annexure P-1), seeks forgiveness with the undertaking not to repeat the same mistake again and prays that the present petition may kindly be disposed of as having been not pressed any further,” the Court observed in its order.
