Salman Khan's Residence Firing Case | Anuj Thapan's Family Seeks CBI Probe into Custodial Death

MUMBAI: Recently, Anuj Thapan, a key figure arrested in connection to the shooting outside Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s residence, was found dead in police custody. His family, deeply suspicious of the circumstances surrounding his demise, has taken legal action, petitioning the Bombay High Court for a CBI investigation into the matter.

“Although the police assert that Thapan committed suicide in the lock-up,”

– Rita Devi, Thapan’s mother, asserted

“I contend there was foul play involved and strongly believe he was murdered.”

The petition, filed on Friday, emphasizes the family’s quest for justice and transparency. Devi’s plea calls upon the high court to direct the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to thoroughly investigate her son’s untimely death. Allegations of physical assault and torture during Thapan’s time in custody further intensify the demand for a comprehensive probe.

“We are determined to uncover the truth,”

– Devi stressed,

“and call upon the court to mandate the police to release the CCTV footage from the station and lock-up where my son was held.”

The petition also emphasizes the necessity of preserving call data records (CDR) of the involved police officials, spanning from April 24 to May 2, to ascertain any irregularities or misconduct.

Furthermore, the family implores the court to order a fresh post-mortem examination, aiming to uncover any overlooked evidence or discrepancies in the initial investigation.

Thapan’s arrest, along with three others, including Sonu Bishnoi and alleged shooters Sagar Pal and Vicky Gupta, came in connection to the firing incident outside Salman Khan’s residence. Notably, gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his brother Anmol Bishnoi remain wanted by the authorities in connection to the case.

Thapan, accused of involvement in the supply of firearms and bullets for the shooting, was apprehended on April 26 in Punjab. Despite legal proceedings, his sudden demise has cast a shadow of doubt over the entire investigation.

Amidst mounting scrutiny, the police, on April 29, presented all four accused, including Thapan, before a special court, extending their custody till May 8. However, the shocking discovery of Thapan’s lifeless body in the lock-up’s toilet at the commissionerate complex in Crawford Market on May 1 has sparked outrage and suspicion.

The shooting incident occurred on April 14 outside Salman Khan’s residence in Mumbai’s Bandra area, prompting law enforcement to swiftly intervene. Gupta and Pal, the suspects implicated in the incident, were later captured in Gujarat.
