‘Father of the Constitution to Grace Every Courtroom’: Karnataka HC Orders Mandatory Display of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s Portrait

'Father of the Constitution to Grace Every Courtroom': Karnataka HC Orders Mandatory Display of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s Portrait

Bengaluru: The High Court of Karnataka officially issued a general circular (No.02/2025) dated June 19, 2025, that directs the display of the photograph or portrait of Bharat Ratna Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in all court halls of the state.

This includes the High Court at Bengaluru, its benches at Dharwad and Kalaburagi, and all district judiciary courts in Karnataka.

The circular was issued in reference to a resolution passed on April 26, 2025, by the Hon’ble Full Court. The matter had been raised several times earlier through representations from the general public, advocates, forums, and organizations.

The Karnataka Government had also communicated with the High Court requesting this action multiple times.

“In view of the representations submitted by the General Public, Advocates, Forums and Organizations and the communication issued by the Government of Karnataka from time to time requesting this office to display the photograph/portrait of Bharata Ratna Dr.B.R.Ambedkar, Father & Architect of Constitution of India in all the Court Halls of High Court of Karnataka, Principal Bench at Bengaluru, Benches at Dharwad and Kalaburagi and District Judiciary of the State, the Hon’ble Full Court, vide Resolution dated 26.04.2025 has resolved to cause display of the Photograph/Portrait of Bharata Ratna Dr.B.R.Ambedkar, Father & Architect of Constitution of India, at prominent suitable place in all the Court Halls of High Court of Karnataka, Principal Bench at Bengaluru, Benches at Dharwad and Kalaburagi as well as District Judiciary of the State.”

This decision marks an important symbolic gesture in paying homage to Dr. Ambedkar, who is widely recognized for his pivotal role in drafting the Constitution of India.

The photograph of Dr. Ambedkar, referred to in the circular as the “Father & Architect of Constitution of India,” is to be displayed in a “prominent suitable place” within all court halls.

“Therefore, it is hereby directed to cause display of the photograph/portrait of Bharata Ratna Dr.B.R.Ambedkar, Father & Architect of Constitution of India, at prominent suitable place in all the Court Halls of the District Judiciary of the State.”

This order was signed and issued by K.S. Bharath Kumar, the Registrar General of the High Court of Karnataka, and is officially titled DJA/Misc-31/2019.

The directive is expected to be implemented with immediate effect, ensuring that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s image stands as a symbol of justice, equality, and constitutional governance in every courtroom across the state.
