EXCLUSIVE | CJI to Lay Foundation Stone for New High Court Building Today

Hyderabad: The Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, is set to inaugurate the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the new Telangana High Court complex Today evening, to be held at 5.30 p.m. This notable development is positioned next to the Prof. Jayashankar Telangana State Agriculture University at Rajendranagar.

The ceremony is expected to see attendance from distinguished members of the judiciary, including Supreme Court judges, Chief Justice Alok Aradhe, and judges from the Telangana High Court. The anticipated construction of the new complex aims to significantly enhance the infrastructure for the judiciary by introducing modern facilities for the legal community, as well as augmenting the accessibility and service for the public. Additionally, the expansion is projected to include additional chambers and courtrooms to accommodate future growth.

The initiation of this project followed discussions between the Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Chief Justice Aradhe, subsequent to which the newly established Congress state government sanctioned the allocation of 100 acres of land in Rajendranagar for this purpose. Moreover, the government has pledged to finance the construction, which is estimated to cost around Rs 500 crore.

However, this decision has not been without its controversies. There has been a wave of protests from students objecting to the allocation of university land for the construction, highlighting concerns over academic resources and campus expansion. Additionally, some members of the legal community have expressed opposition to relocating the High Court from its central location in the city to a more peripheral area, suggesting potential inconvenience and disruption.

Despite these challenges, the High Court’s administration has remained resolute in its decision to relocate, citing the current facility’s limitations in accommodating technological advancements and increasing personnel needs.

The existing structure has been found inadequate in providing necessary chambers for senior and other advocates due to spatial constraints. Furthermore, the officials highlighted the inevitable need for more courtrooms to match the potential increase in the High Court’s capacity in the future.

Another significant issue addressed was the insufficient vehicle parking space, which continued to be problematic even after extending into adjacent land previously belonging to an old maternity hospital, causing inconvenience for lawyers and their clients alike.

This move towards a new complex reflects an effort to address these pressing issues and to lay the foundation for a more efficient and expansive judicial system in Telangana.
