However, the court declined his request to suspend or stay the seven-year imprisonment sentence that was previously handed down by a district court.
Dhananjay Singh, along with his associate Santosh Vikram, had been convicted on March 6 by the MP-MLA court in Jaunpur for the kidnapping and extortion of Abhinav Singhal, the project manager of Namami Gange. Both were sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment.
The appeal against this sentence was considered on April 24, and Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh of the Allahabad High Court reserved the decision after hearing the criminal appeal filed by Singh and Vikram.
While Singh has secured bail, the terms stipulate that he remains ineligible to contest elections. This legal outcome affects his earlier plans to run for the Lok Sabha elections from the Jaunpur seat. His conviction prohibits him from participating in the election process.
In the meantime, Singh’s wife, Srikala Reddy, is actively engaged in politics, contesting the Jaunpur parliamentary constituency under the Bahujan Samaj Party banner.
