KOLKATA: The Calcutta High Court has mandated the West Bengal government to ensure the safe return of individuals displaced by the recent post-poll violence. This order is a significant move towards restoring peace and normalcy in the affected regions.

The court’s directive, issued on Friday(21st June) session, emphasized the importance of addressing the plight of those forced to flee their homes due to the violence that erupted following the polls. The bench, comprising Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya, expressed serious concern over the displacement of people and the need for their immediate rehabilitation.

“The West Bengal government must promptly and effectively ensure the safe return of all individuals displaced by the post-poll violence to their homes.”

– the court stated unequivocally.

It further added-

“The state administration bears the responsibility of upholding law and order and safeguarding the safety and security of its residents.”

The court also directed the deployment of central forces in the state until June 26, when the matter would be listed for hearing again. This measure aims to provide a secure environment for the displaced individuals to return to their homes without fear of further violence.

The High Court’s order came in response to numerous complaints about the government’s inaction in addressing the issue of displacement. The bench highlighted that the administration’s failure to protect its citizens and ensure their safe return was unacceptable.

“It is the obligation of the state to safeguard its citizens and ensure they can reside in their homes free from fear.”

-the court remarked.

In addition to ordering the return of the displaced, the court instructed the state government to provide adequate compensation and rehabilitation for the victims. This includes rebuilding destroyed properties and providing financial assistance to those who have lost their livelihoods due to the violence.

To facilitate the safe return of the displaced individuals, the court has extended the deployment of central forces in the state.

“The presence of central forces is crucial for upholding law and order and ensuring the safe return of displaced individuals to their homes.”

-the court observed.

The deployment of central forces is seen as a crucial step in restoring normalcy and ensuring the safety of the affected individuals. The court has scheduled the next hearing for June 26 to review the progress made by the state government in implementing its orders.

The High Court’s directive underscores the responsibility of the West Bengal government to safeguard its citizens and restore their confidence in the state’s ability to protect them. The court’s stern message serves as a reminder that the administration must act speedy and decisively to address the aftermath of the post-poll violence.

“The state government must promptly take all necessary measures to restore peace and facilitate the safe return of those displaced by the violence to their homes.”
