Mumbai: The Bombay High Court dismissed a plea filed by Zee Studios seeking the release of the censor certificate for Emergency, a film starring Kangana Ranaut.
This decision came after Zee confirmed that the film’s producers had agreed to make certain cuts as recommended by the revising committee of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
As per an arrangement based on email communication dated September 28, Emergency co-producer Manikarnika Films, headed by Kangana Ranaut, requested a one-month period to implement the necessary cuts.
Following this, the CBFC will review the film and decide on its certification within two weeks.
A bench consisting of Justices BP Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla acknowledged this agreement and subsequently dismissed Zee’s plea, clarifying that the Court did not address the merits of the case.
The censor certificate for Emergency, a film depicting the national emergency declared by Indira Gandhi’s Congress government in the 1970s, previously withheld by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) due to concerns about misrepresentation of the Sikh community.
On Monday, September 30, the CBFC, represented by Advocate Abhinav Chandrachud, informed the Bombay High Court that the film’s co-producer and lead actress, Kangana Ranaut, had agreed to implement cuts recommended by the CBFC’s Revising Committee.
However, Zee Studios’ counsel, Senior Advocate Sharan Jagtiani, requested additional time to confirm the details of the proposed cuts. As a result, the hearing was adjourned to Thursday, October 3, and then further extended to Friday.
The case has now been closed, as both parties, including the film’s producers, have agreed to implement the suggested cuts.
