New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed Delhi University (DU) to take strong and effective measures to prevent defacement of university properties and avoid traffic jams during the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections.

The Court emphasized the need for proper planning and strict enforcement to ensure that the elections are conducted smoothly and without disruption.

The Bench, comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, instructed Delhi University to file a detailed affidavit outlining all the steps and measures it has put in place to ensure that the DUSU elections are conducted in an orderly manner.

The Court highlighted the importance of accountability and proactive measures in managing election-related activities on campus.

In addition, the Court directed the Delhi Police to extend full assistance to Delhi University in enforcing the election norms and ensuring compliance with all guidelines.

This move is aimed at preventing any law and order issues, traffic congestion, and damage to university property during the highly anticipated student elections.

The court added,

“We call upon the appropriate authority of DU to file an affidavit detailing the measures which are being taken to ensure election take place in orderly manner,”

The Delhi High Court’s intervention comes in response to concerns raised over the potential defacement of property and traffic disruption in previous DUSU elections.

By seeking an affidavit from the university, the Court intends to ensure that all preventive and corrective steps are properly documented and implemented.

Experts say that university elections often see a high level of campaigning activity, which sometimes leads to vandalism, graffiti, and chaotic traffic situations. The Court’s directions aim to maintain law and order on campus and ensure that the elections proceed in a peaceful and structured manner.

With these orders, the Delhi High Court has made it clear that both the university authorities and law enforcement agencies must work together to avoid any untoward incidents during the DUSU elections.

The Court stressed the importance of a well-organized and regulated electoral process for students, reinforcing the need for compliance with all election-related norms.
