Karnataka: Today (10th July): The Karnataka High Court took suo motu cognisance of the dengue outbreak in Bengaluru and other parts of the state.

Chief Justice NV Anjaria and Justice KV Aravind constituted a bench that treated a letter to the editor published in DH on July 9, 2024, along with other supporting news items, as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).

The bench has instructed the state government and BBMP to provide information on preventive and remedial actions taken to curb the spread of dengue, as well as measures implemented to enhance medical facilities in Bengaluru and rural areas across Karnataka. Additionally, authorities have been directed to report on efforts to raise public awareness and control mosquito breeding.

On Monday, the Karnataka government issued a directive mandating all gram panchayats to implement protocols for managing dengue cases. Priyank Kharge, Minister of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, emphasized the importance of regular cleaning of water storage tanks, open reservoirs, and public toilets to maintain sanitation standards.

He advised setting up “Village Health, Sanitation and Nutrition Committees” to promote dengue control initiatives actively.

The directive includes instructions for gram panchayats to conduct weekly sanitation checks, ensure swift drainage of rainwater to prevent mosquito breeding, and maintain cleanliness in residential, commercial, and public areas.

It also emphasizes the need for operational control valves in water supply systems to prevent water stagnation.

The Minister stressed the importance of health education programs organized by gram panchayats to raise awareness about dengue prevention among residents, involving community health volunteers and local educational institutions.
