The victim’s family’s counsel opposed the extension, asserting that if Senger remained outside, he should be under 24/7 CCTV surveillance. This led to heated arguments between the counsels, prompting the bench to deliberate in chambers before issuing its order.

NEW DELHI: On Friday (20th Dec), the Delhi High Court extended the medical relief granted to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Senger until January 15, 2025.

A bench comprising Justice Pratibha M. Singh and Justice Amit Sharma granted the extension after noting the significant number of visitors meeting Senger.

The court remarked, “We have not received such a report from AIIMS. There are too many visitors.”

Senger’s counsel assured the court that this issue would not persist, explaining that Senger, being unwell and a former MLA, attracted many well-wishers.

The victim’s family’s counsel opposed the extension, asserting that if Senger remained outside, he should be under 24/7 CCTV surveillance. This led to heated arguments between the counsels, prompting the bench to deliberate in chambers before issuing its order.

The bench remarked, “Obviously, we (court) cannot convince both of you.”

The victim’s mother, present in court, also voiced her objections to the medical relief granted to Senger.

Earlier, on December 5, the bench had directed the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to submit a detailed report on Senger’s medical condition to assess if his treatment could be managed within the jail. The court had also granted him interim bail.

Meanwhile, Delhi High Court on 3rd Dec directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to respond to a plea from expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who is seeking suspension of his 10-year prison sentence on medical grounds.

The court, presided over by Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri, also instructed jail authorities to submit a report on Sengar’s medical condition.

Senger was sentenced to life imprisonment in December 2022 for the rape of a minor in 2017. In 2022, a division bench of Justice Mukta Gupta and Justice Poonam A. Bamba had granted him two months of interim bail to attend his daughter’s wedding.
