The court has also directed the formation of a special panel, supervised by the Vice Chancellor, to resolve the issue. Additionally, the university has been asked to submit a report on the matter.
The case was heard based on a petition filed by one of the 17 students who were suspended earlier this month. The students were accused of “protesting without prior permission” and “defacing public property.”
The High Court’s intervention has provided temporary relief to the students as more of them are expected to approach the court individually, seeking to overturn their suspensions.
Background
The students of JMI have been actively protesting against the university’s strict order that bans protests and meetings on campus without prior approval. Their demonstrations have also been fueled by the recent suspension of four PhD scholars who participated in a protest on December 14, 2024.
This protest marked the fifth anniversary of the violent clashes between anti-CAA protesters and police at the JMI campus in 2019.
