NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court passed a strong legal order stopping 56 websites from showing or sharing the latest Bollywood films Maalik and Sarbala Ji without permission. These two movies are produced by Tips Films Limited, a popular production company in India.
The order was given by Justice Amit Bansal after hearing a complaint from Tips Films. The court clearly said that these websites cannot host, stream, upload, or distribute the two films or any part of them because the rights belong only to the producer.
The movie Maalik, featuring actors Rajkumar Rao and Manushi Chillar, was released on July 11. Another film, Sarbala Ji, starring Ammy Virk and Gippy Grewal, is going to be released on July 18. Tips Films was worried that these films could be leaked or shown illegally online by some websites, and this would harm their business badly.
While giving the order on July 11, the judge said,
“A prima facie case is made in favour of the plaintiff. Balance of convenience is also in favour of the plaintiff and against the defendants. Further, irreparable harm or injury would be caused to the plaintiff if an interim injunction order is not passed.”
This means the court found early evidence that the producer was right in being concerned, and if no quick action was taken, the producer could suffer big financial loss.
Because of this, the court decided to stop all 56 websites from showing or uploading the movies. It also asked all internet service providers (ISPs) across India to block these websites immediately so that users cannot open them and watch the movies illegally.
Tips Films Limited told the court that they are facing an “imminent threat” of their movies getting leaked or shown online without permission. They also said that these websites are not just showing the movies illegally but are hiding who owns them by using secret domain privacy services, which makes it difficult to catch them.
The court has now listed the next hearing in the case on November 17. Until then, the ban on these websites will continue, and strong action will be taken if the order is not followed.
