Today (20th March) Congress approached the Delhi High Court to contest Income Tax reassessment proceedings. The party’s counsel said the I-T authorities have re-opened the assessment of four years and urged the court to allow listing of the pleas for Thursday.

NEW DELHI: Today (20th March): The Congress party moved against the Tax Re-assessment conducted by the authorities, filing a case before the Delhi High Court. The matter was presented by the party’s legal representatives before a bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet PS Arora, who have agreed to schedule a hearing for Thursday.

Allowing the request for urgent hearing, the bench said, “Okay if in order by 12:30 PM, it will be listed tomorrow”.
The counsel representing the Congress highlighted that the Income Tax (I-T) authorities have reopened assessments spanning four years and requested the court expedite the listing of the pleas for Thursday’s session. Notably, three petitions concerning different assessment years have already been slated for the day’s hearings.

Background
The matter followed after the High Court decided not to interfere with the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal’s ruling. The Tribunal rejected a plea to stay the Income Tax Department from sending a notice to Congress, asking for payment of over Rs 100 crore in outstanding taxes.
The assessing officer had raised a tax demand of more than Rs 100 crore for the assessment year 2018-19 when the income was assessed to be more than Rs 199 crore.
