The Muslim body presented the apology before the court on Friday, September 27, after the court previously condemned the committee’s actions as “communal politics” through its petitions.
On Wednesday, September 25, the court criticized the committee for its “scandalous pleadings” and directed it to withdraw its plea. However, the court insisted that the withdrawal must be accompanied by an apology and an application to remove the objectionable allegations made against a division bench that had previously dismissed their plea.
During the Friday hearing, the bench, led by Chief Justice Manmohan, deferred the case until the following Tuesday, giving the committee time to officially record the necessary documents, including the apology and withdrawal.
Earlier, a division bench of the Delhi High Court had dismissed the plea opposing the installation of the statue, stating that there was no infringement on the committee’s right to offer prayers or perform any religious rites in the area. The court was clear that the installation of the statue posed no threat to the religious practices of the community.
The court also emphasized the importance of national unity, stating-
“History should not be divided on communal grounds. Rani Lakshmibai is a national hero, cutting across all religious lines.”
The case has garnered significant attention, as it brings to the forefront the debate on preserving historical and cultural heritage while maintaining communal harmony. With the apology now filed, the matter awaits further hearing next week.
