Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Justice Shree Chandrashekhar as New Chief Justice of Bombay High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended Justice Shree Chandrashekhar for appointment as the next Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

The official resolution was uploaded on the Supreme Court website after the Collegium meeting held on 25th August 2025.

According to the notification, Justice Chandrashekhar, who is presently a judge of the Bombay High Court and originally from the Jharkhand High Court, has been chosen for this important position.

Justice Shree Chandrashekhar is a respected Indian judge who has been recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium to take charge as the new Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court in August 2025.

With a long and distinguished career in law, he has worked both as a lawyer and as a judge, handling thousands of important cases and serving in multiple High Courts across India.

Early Life and Legal Career

Justice Shree Chandrashekhar began his legal journey when he enrolled as an advocate with the Delhi State Bar Council on 9th December 1993. He started practicing in Delhi, where he gained wide experience in both criminal and civil matters.

Over nearly two decades, he appeared in around 3,500 cases before the Supreme Court of India, with about 140 cases leading to reported judgments.

As an advocate, he represented several government bodies and institutions, including the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the State of Jharkhand, the Bihar State Housing Board, the Bihar State Pollution Control Board, the Jharkhand State Electricity Board, and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

He also acted as Standing Counsel for various corporations and private companies, building a strong reputation for his advocacy skills.

Judicial Career

Justice Chandrashekhar was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Jharkhand High Court on 17th January 2013. He became a Permanent Judge on 27th June 2014. During his judicial career, he was known for his fair approach and in-depth knowledge of law.

On 29th December 2023, he was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, where he provided leadership and handled several important matters.

Later, in July 2025, he was transferred from the Rajasthan High Court to the Bombay High Court. Soon after, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended his appointment as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, one of the most prestigious high courts in the country.

Legacy and Recognition

Justice Shree Chandrashekhar’s journey from being a young lawyer in Delhi to becoming the Chief Justice-designate of the Bombay High Court reflects his dedication, discipline, and vast legal knowledge.

His contribution as both a lawyer and a judge has strengthened the Indian judicial system, making him one of the respected figures in the legal fraternity today.
