Chief Justice Forced to Leave Kerala High Court: Stench from Civet Causes Full Closure of HC in Less Than 20 Minutes of Sitting

KERALA: The Kerala High Court witnessed chaos on Tuesday morning when proceedings before the Chief Justice’s Division Bench had to be abruptly adjourned due to an unbearable stench inside the courtroom.

According to reports, a civet from the nearby Mangalavanam sanctuary had sneaked into the Chief Justice’s courtroom during the night. By morning, the mess it left behind created such a foul smell that judges, lawyers, and court staff were forced to vacate the premises.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji attempted to continue hearings but was compelled to rise within 20 minutes. As a result, all matters listed for the day before the Bench had to be adjourned.

The incident has once again reignited debates about the proximity of the Kerala High Court complex to the Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary, a protected eco-sensitive zone in Kochi. While the sanctuary is an environmental treasure, its closeness to the court has often caused inconvenience.

Over the years, large pythons, civets, and other wild animals have been spotted near or inside the High Court premises, causing alarm among lawyers, litigants, and staff. Wildlife conservationists and sections of the legal community have highlighted this as a safety and hygiene concern, while also stressing the importance of preserving the sanctuary.

The matter has previously surfaced in discussions about shifting the High Court from Kochi city to Kalamassery, a suburb that offers more space and potentially fewer wildlife-related disruptions.
